Q: Why is it “Made in Markham”?

It will proudly be MADE IN MARKHAM, which has a dynamic business climate, communities that are united primarily by a suburban culture and a vibrant innovation ecosystem in our province.

Markham is a prime location to offer production and post-production services to an industry growing in size and importance, with its close proximity to Toronto Pearson International Airport, a vast highway network (407, 404, and 401) and speedy, regional public transportation.

Markham is also a haven for commuters because it is the home to the largest ICT sector concentration per population in Canada. All poised to support new business and population growth, and a number of leading financial services and data centre companies are ready to facilitate Amazon’s future operations. We have the lowest industrial and commercial tax rates in the GTA, and approximately 60% of our residents have a post-secondary education.

Q: Where in Markham is First Studio City’s Markham Movieland located?

First Studio City in Markham, Ontario is located just over 25 KM from Toronto City Hall, just under a 30 minute drive up the Don Valley Parkway and across the 407 and under 40 KM to Pearson International Airport.

Markham through York Region Transit (YRT) has implemented a transit system called Viva to ease the strain on the region’s congested roads. Viva is similar to YRT but is used as an express bus service with the ability to change traffic signals to help reduce delays. The YRT is also planning to build a transit terminal near Cornell soon.

The planned Young Subway Extension [YSE] is a cross-jurisdictional project from the City of Toronto into the City of Markham, City of Vaughan and the Town of Richmond Hill.

The YSE extends 7.4 kilometres north from Finch Station in Toronto to the Richmond Hill/Langstaff Gateway Urban Growth Centre at Highway 7.

This critical rapid transit link will include five stations at Cummer/Drewry, Steeles, Clark, Langstaff/Longbridge and Richmond Hill Centre High-tech hub.”

Markham Movieland will also play an integral part of the community, celebrate cultural diversity and contribute to the economic strength of Canada’s film and entertainment industry.

Q: What is FIRST STUDIO CITY’s competitive advantage compared to other studios?

This space will be key to help scale film and production in Canada in the Province of Ontario, that is the epicentre of Canadian film and television. We’re confident in the new business model and believe it has what it needs to be successful in attracting and retaining film production.

Overall, the film industry continues to thrive, but in a different manner than historically. Content is still in high demand, but is being distributed to new and growing channels. Consequently, those companies that have the financing and the ability to produce successful movies will thrive in these new times.
